Against the habit
Ethnological Museum Berlin
Website quote:
In September 2022, the Humboldt Forum in Berlin opened the last parts of its permanent exhibitions. To mark the occasion, more than 80 international guests attended a productive workshop week to develop ideas and make demands for the future of the Forum and the museums. The results of this week are summarized in the paper “Dignity - Transparency - Continuity”. One of the ideas is the “Indigenous Embassy”. In October 2023, ten international partners further developed this idea into the Global Cultural Assembly, the GCA, in a new workshop week in Berlin. An important question of the 2023 workshop was how to get the museum to question habits, open up to new ideas and not take anything for granted. Just right for the first episode of “Against Habit”. Some of the participants took the time to talk to us about the workshop. You will find an exhibition space on the 3rd floor of the Humboldt Forum that will showcase and accompany the work of the GCA. Under the title “From Declaration to Action” (PDF, 207 KB), the final paper with ideas and demands written by the international partners on the occasion of the workshop in October 2023 will also be presented there.

Interview with Sheikh Eşref Efendi
What is the view of Sufism, the liberal movement in Islam with ascetic tendencies and a pronounced spiritual orientation, on the current challenges of our time? Sheikh Eşref Efendi from the Honorable Naqshbandiyya Order and one of the spiritual leaders of Sufism takes a stand on this.
In the interfaith interview series “Religion Matters” of the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation, Sheikh Eşref Efendi condemns the recent Islamist-motivated terrorist attacks in Paris, Nice, Dresden and Vienna. Those who commit such acts are clearly acting against the teachings of their religion and have, in a sense, excommunicated themselves. He appealed for Islam to be lived properly, with love and tolerance. Sheikh Eşref Efendi calls for more respect for personalities, values and saints in connection with the depiction of the Muhammad cartoons. He calls on Shiites and Sunnis to return to unity. They belong to the same tree. Regarding the state of religious freedom, the Sufi leader says that politicians need to take this issue more seriously and involve representatives of the various religions more closely.
The corona pandemic has led to religion playing and having to play a stronger role again. Heavenly support is now needed, as technologies are no longer helpful, said Sheikh Eşref Efendi. Spirituality and spiritual leaders are needed right now. In the tradition of the great prophets such as Jesus, Moses and Mohammed, they must spread the truth right now, without fear of the people or politics, in order to give hope and confidence. Because after the current darkness, the sun will shine again, the Sufi leader is certain.

“The award was created as a unique piece by the regional and internationally renowned art studio Mastro7 and shows a Sufi flower symbol deeply rooted in a gemstone rock, steadfastly striving for peace and charity,” said Lia Beltrami, founder of the Religion Today Festival and Delegate for Interreligious Dialogue of the Ordo Fratres Minorem (Franciscan Order) in Rome.

World Week of Interfaith Harmony
Christian-Muslim message of greeting
Representatives of the Christian and Muslim communities in Eigeltingen, a modest town in southern Germany, perform prayers in each other's places of worship. Catholic priest Dominik Rimmele says a prayer on behalf of the local Christian Protestant community for their Muslim friends in the prayer room of the Rabbaniyya Sufi Center. Sheikh Eşref Efendi from the Order of the Honorable Naqshbandiyya Aliyyah says a prayer for the Christian brothers and sisters in the parish church of St. Mauritius.
Common prayers in each other's places of worship strengthen the bond of peace in the prayers and are a visible proof of the mutual trust between the partners in faith.
As it is not possible to hold a joint live event due to COVID-19 restrictions, we have made a video for this year's WIHW. May our prayers and message of peace be accepted.

Is peace possible, even though the third world war seems much more likely?
SEE: “The behavior of mankind makes war inevitable. For a lasting final peace, man must know how to share. To share all the favors that Allah, God gives them.”

"Wie können wir strukturellen Rassismus gezielter bekämpfen und die Verwaltung - vor allem von kleineren Orten, die keine Erfahrungen mit Minderheitengruppen haben - sensibilisieren und zur Kooperation für gemeinsame Projekte zur Diversität motivieren?"
Aktuell wurde unsere Initiative in das Umsetzungsprogramm aufgenommen. Das Umsetzungsprogramm läuft bis zum 17. August 2021.
