All Life is based on Learning

Sheikh Eşref Efendi, Sufiland  11.02.2016
  • Our whole life is based on learning. If you are not learning, why are you living? Each child is here to learn, it is being raised to learn and by learning. In addition, everybody is learning through education.

Therefore, life is what comes after learning, depending on what you learn.
    So what have you learned?
How will you live your life?
    How do you do?
    How do you live?
What is your standing in life?

    - On my hands, Sheikh! But, how far can you walk on your hands?
O Sheikh, I grew up in a circus and I learned to walk like that there. I was the clown.

And you are still the clown, because you were born and raised in a circus, and everybody is laughing at you.

That is his job. But he himself is crying all the time, so I have heard.
That is what he is doing all his life.

The masters of our path realized this and they explained to us how to walk on that path and gave us recommendations. Without their guidance, we never could have learned. And we have learned through education, because no one can teach himself or herself. “And We taught Adam!”

How else could he have learned, if not with a teacher?

And Allah said, I taught him all he knew. We taught him all the names that not even the angels knew, as every angel has their appointed field of work and according to their fields, they got their knowledge. And one of them is a psychologist and the other is a sociologist.

  • They do not learn everything. But the human has been created to learn everything. And by expanding his knowledge his capacities to learn will expand as well.

    How far will that go?

In the universe, there is no direction. The human needs direction. And we ask Allah to take us to the right path, and that is what Allah and his messengers told us: Come to the right path and stay on it.

Do not stray too much to the right or left, but stay in the middle.

Later at some point, there will be no direction.
Where to go then? You have become the direction!

Because those that found the way to Allah, they have become the path. For others. And that is how we want to learn and what we have been told to learn.

This can only work with us, as we need to find the teacher to guide us; to tell us, where to go and which corners to turn. So once we have found the right and just way, we do not need to be corrected, as we are on the right path.

And the saints tell us to learn constantly.

So we need to learn and acquire knowledge. But not only that, as the Lord has given us a present, a secret, and you need to find that.

So go find the one that knows your secret. And if you do, do you think they will give it to you just like that? I will not give you my secret, but your secret!

Well, then please give it to me!
I will not do that right away, as you will not give everything to a child either.

  • Even if a child asks its parents to give it the keys to the flat, but if they think you are not ready yet, the child will not be successful.

And the Sheikh will not give you your secret just yet. Until you have earned his trust. And he will test your loyalty and there will be numerous of those trials.

And there once was a man that wanted to learn his secret, as he had learned that with your secret revealed, you would get the greatest powers there are.

So he went to someone he had heard off and asked him, Can you tell me my secret?
Sure, you are at the right address; I can give that to you.

But you need to prove to me that you are worth it.
So I have a garden here, work in it, that there shall be a small river going through.

And the man, then a student, did so and when he was finally done, he told the Sheikh.
So can you tell me my secret yet?

I did my work! – Well, there is a lot work here to be done and will you help me. Sure, if that gets me closer to my secret.

And the student served him for ten years.

Eventually, he was fed up and talked to his Sheikh. I served you for so many years, haven’t I earned the right to know my secret?

Well, did you do everything, I asked of you?
Yes, I did! And, can I trust you?
Yes, sure you can! Well, then I will give you a last task before that.
Please bring that box here to my student Hassan in the other village.
But only to him and no one else!

  • So the student went, and suddenly he heard noises. And then a rattling. He was confused at first but realized it came from the box. He got curious. He checked his back, no one there. He checked his sides and up and down, no one watching. So he opened that box, and a mouse came out! He was surprised.

And when he asked his Sheikh why he had been given a mouse, the Sheikh told him, Well do you think, I would give you a secret, before I can be absolutely sure that you can keep a secret? But you couldn›t even keep a mouse to yourself as instructed!

So we need to learn to gain trust of our Sheikh. And there once was the cat Sheikh, one of the closest companions of the prophet Mohammed (Sav).

Before the prophet died, he told him three great secrets. So after the death of the prophet, the cat Sheikh was approached by the closest companions for what those secrets were. And the cat Sheikh told them the following.

If I told the first secret to the normal people, they would kill me on the spot. If I told the second secret to the scribes and scholars, they would not understand and kill me instead on the spot as well.

And if I told the third secret to you, the saints, you would kill me on the spot as well. So I›d rather keep those secrets to myself, so I can live a little longer.

And that is what we need to learn. We need to learn to keep a secret. But at first, we need to keep a mouse. As we need to learn to earn the trust of our master and teacher.

So may the Lord increase our understanding and further our knowledge, that we shall become one of those that will not need direction, but will become the direction itself.
